Jupiter and Io

The "pizza moon" in the title of this blog is Io, one of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter -- Io, Callista, Ganymede, and Europa -- each of which is named for one of Jupiter's (Zeus's) many lovers. Io happens to be the closest of those moons to Jupiter's surface, which in turn causes the constant and violent volcanic activity that gives Io its "pizza" appearance. To attempt a quick recap of the legend of Jupiter and Io, and how that myth plays itself out in the reality of these two heavenly bodies, simply would not do justice to its many nuances. All in good time.
